Built in 1875, the station at Kirkby Stephen was restored in 2005. Platform Cottage, at the North end of the station building, is a ground floor 2-person luxurious apartment. Refurbished in 2023 it offers excellent self-catering accommodation in the beautiful and un-spoilt Upper Eden Valley of Cumbria. This cottage can be let together with the adjoining first floor Station Cottage if there are 4 of you.
On the platform side you can watch steam-hauled excursion trains or diesel-hauled 2,000-tonne coal trains blasting uphill to Ais Gill summit. The spectacular valley of Mallerstang and Wild Boar Fell are right on your doorstep, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks are in easy reach as is Hadrian’s Wall to the north. It’s perfect for walking the fells and cycling – as well as travelling on the spectacular Settle & Carlisle line.
There is private parking and an enclosed garden area for Platform Cottage guests.
There are 7 passenger trains calling each way on weekdays and Saturdays, so it is well connected to other stations on the Settle – Carlisle Line and beyond. Freight trains pass through day and night time mostly during weekdays.
Changeover days are Fridays and Mondays:
This enables us to offer stays of: 7 (or 14) nights, (Fri – Fri), Long Weekend Breaks of 3 nights (Fri – Mon) and Mid-week Breaks of 4 nights, (Mon – Fri).
The house has free wi-fi for guests and there is a webcam close by looking north along the railway line.
Please note there is a lower age limit for children of 7 yrs at Platform Cottage.
